It was a mighty close call for the top spot on this list, but this song from the 1990 X album just got pipped. By My Side is the band at its most introspective, a brutally sad insight into the issues faced by Hutchence.
The song is eery in its predictions of the lead singer's death, as if Hutchence had received a premonition of what was to come. The song was recorded shortly before an incident involving the lead singer and a taxi driver, which left Hutchence without taste or smell, and heralded the beginning of a downward spiral he could not recover from.
Every word spoken by Hutchence is searingly heartfelt, his need and desire to have his love by his side oozing out. The chorus screams out the lead singer's desires, as the band reaches a crescendo that mirrors Hutchence's emotional journey. If the song just had one more verse it probably would have topped this list.
