10 Greatest Love Songs In Rock

1. Something - The Beatles

No rock fan was ever going to be ready for when the Beatles would eventually stop. By the time the Fab Four had actually decided to call it quits, they did so pretty discreetly, working on their final album Abbey Road before formally announcing any departure. Though the backbone of each Beatles' song had been love, the purest expression of it actually didn't come from John Lennon or Paul McCartney.

Being put on the backburner for most of the group's career, George Harrison had been stockpiling material for his own solo work, only to leave one of his purest songs for the Beatles with Something. Written about his wife Patti, this tune includes some of the most open-hearted yearning ever to be captured in a Beatles song. With just a few words setting the scene, Harrison speaks to the power of his love making the rest of the world around him more beautiful than it already is.

The flow of the song ended up coming together so naturally that Harrison almost ditched the song, thinking that the melody had come to him much too easily. It was all his though, turning into one of the best songs on the album and being called the greatest tune on the record by both Lennon and McCartney. It takes a lot to break the Lennon/McCartney stronghold, and yet this song managed to make its way into history through sheer force of will alone.
