10 Greatest Love Songs On The Magnetic Fields '69 Love Songs'

1. Acoustic Guitar

Unsuprisingly given the title this sparse, stripped back track is underpinned by delicately picked acoustic guitar. It’s feels like a duet for guitar and vocal, with gently chiming guitar solo responding to the singer’s words.

Lead vocalist Claudia Gonson exhorts the guitar to bring back a girl who “always loved the sound of your strum”. In exchange she promises to make the guitar famous around the world but beyond that promise comes a threat...

“Acoustic guitar, if you think I play hard/well you could have belonged to Steve Earle/Or Charo or Gwar/I could sell you tomorrow/so bring me back my girl.”

Between the witty, heartfelt words and the beautiful backing, if this song doesn’t bring Gonson’s girl back nothing will.
