5. Elvis Presley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e3CFIHCe8M In modern times, the King has become a brand and an institution. Its easy to dismiss him as a result. But look back to his original recordings- Thats Alright, Mystery Train and Hound Dog still have it. With the awesome Scotty Moore packing his 6-string in tow, early Elvis has class, cool and a great, great rock voice born of traditional country and blues. What Elvis represents is the birth of the rock star persona- he had a style all of his own both in his voice and his quiff. His later years show a maturity that fails to materialise in some rock singers. His crooning on Willie Nelsons Always On My Mind is as heartfelt as any Celine Dion and arguably as accomplished as Sinatra et al. So for that reason Elviss place in this list is assured. Historic, game changing and, quite simply, great. RECOMMENDED LISTENING: The 50 Greatest Hits
