10 Greatest Metal Anthems Of All Time
5. Holy wars..The Punishment Due-Megadeth
When it comes to technical virtuosity behind your instrument, Megadeth are one of the true titans of the thrash metal genre. Even though the band has many instances of masterful playing, "Holy Wars" stands as one of their most complex musical journeys.
Starting from the schizophrenic riffs of the intro, the track never lets up as each riff arrives like a machine gun firing against your skull. Speaking of gunfire, the lyrics are also incredibly thoughtful, as Dave Mustaine offers a gripping condemnation of fighting wars over religious disagreements.
Once you've hit what seems to be the peak, the song turns around into a slower section whose riffs evoke the image of a gargantuan figure coming to strike you down. As that beast seems to inch closer and closer with every second, the song explodes into a fury of double-bass pedals and lightning-fast solo work from Marty Friedman. It's an all-out race to the finish as the song cuts off on a dime, leaving the listener near-delirious.
While it is somewhat meaningless to debate who is the best metal band, songs like "Holy Wars" certainly given giants like Metallica a run for their money.
