10 Greatest MTV Unplugged Rock Performances
5. Stone Temple Pilots
In 1993, Stone Temple Pilots were riding high on their success of their debut album Core, which had arrived a year earlier on Atlantic Records and had seen them labelled one of the most prominent grunge bands not to hail from the Seattle music scene.
The band was formed by brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass and backing vocals), but were best known for their flamboyant and outspoken singer Scott Weiland; a true rock star who was known for his heavy drug use as much as he was for his strong soulful vocals.
Weiland famously performed their Unplugged show in a gothic rocking chair, with a set largely taken from their debut album. The band also previewed the track Big Empty, which would go onto become one of their biggest hits, featuring on the soundtrack for The Crow, as well on their forthcoming sophomore album Purple, both of which were released a year later in 1994.
