10 Greatest Nu Metal Albums Of All Time
6. P.O.D.: Satellite (2001)
Christian-centric nu metal may seem a little improbable these days but it enjoyed a spell of great success under P.O.D.’s (Payable On Death) leadership. Exploding onto the scene with a hard-hitting, lyrical honesty like few others, P.O.D. bravely tackled harrowing subject matter including school-shootings and grieving.
Despite plentiful doom and gloom, P.O.D. put out a lot more positivity than most on the nu metal scene thanks to tracks like the smash hit Alive. Released at the time of the 9/11 tragedy, Alive’s emphasis on faith and inner peace resonated with troubled listeners everywhere. Singles Youth Of The Nation and Here Comes The Boom further accentuated the album’s listenability and success.
In regards to their frequent use of Christian themes, P.O.D. have often been surrounded in controversy. Both praise and criticism has landed on their combination of religious and more secular music. Some have accused P.O.D. of toning down their beliefs for the sake of sales while others have praised them for extending beyond the Christian music world to reach wider audiences.
P.O.D.’s emphasis on a slightly more conservative sound ultimately helped shift nu metal towards its blander noughties demise. The band themselves, however, were anything but and this remains a lauded classic of the genre.
