10 Greatest Nu Metal Albums Of All Time

7. Slipknot: Slipknot (1999)

Korn debut album
Roadrunner

The legend of Slipknot transcended nu metal many years ago. So much so now that many would not consider them nu metal at all. Former drummer Joey Jordinson himself preferred to emphasise their death and thrash influences in interviews. While the group steered away from nu metal from Iowa onwards, it can’t be denied that their self titled debut is among the best and brightest nu metal has to offer.

Wait and Bleed is a perfect mosh pit starter with its chaotic riffs and disturbed lyrics of impending doom. Spit it Out gives Corey Taylor the space to spit plenty of his own venom and The Shining inspired music video was a suitably creepy hit at the time. Trying to explain 742617000027 can be either fun or maddening and Prosthetics provides the musical equivalent of an extreme horror movie.

One of the most inventive metal bands of all time, Slipknot’s debut LP was a ferocious addition to the nu metal scene. Coming out at a point where the likes of Korn, Coal Chamber, Limp Bizkit and Mushroomhead were already big, Slipknot made them all look rather wholesome in comparison. Unapologetically brutal, Slipknot remains an overdose of audio adrenaline 21 years later.
