10 Greatest Rock Frontmen Of All Time

8. Jim Morrison - The Doors

In the Summer of Love era of the 60's, rock frontmen were very few and far between. While there were singers, most of them were often mellow songwriters or part of a bigger collective unit. When the Doors came out with their dark psychedelic vision, Jim Morrison became the template for what a frontman should be.

Sauntering across the stage in leather pants and a visible aura, Morrison took live performances to their absolute extreme. As opposed to simply playing songs, Morrison saw the live show as the ultimate expression of performance art, which he used to his advantage with unplanned spontaneity. While the band would be playing a song, Morrison would occasionally start to ramble into he worked the crowd into a frenzy. From spoken word poetry to calling out law enforcement, there was nothing that Morrison would not touch once he got the microphone in his hand.

The rest of the band would go right along as they vamped on their instruments, but the star of the show would always be what wildman Morrison was going to have up his sleeve whenever he took the stage. Combining art and rock and roll anarchy to create something truly spectacular.
