10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2010s

8. House Of The Rising Sun - Five Finger Death Punch

Although it’s actually a traditional American folk song, House of the Rising Sun is most commonly associated with British band The Animals, who brought out a hit version in 1964. Since then, many, many acts have put their own spin on this tale of woe and misery, including Dolly Parton, French rock icon Johnny Hallyday, and heavy metal giants Five Finger Death Punch.

Included as the final song on their 2014 album The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 2 (which is a mouthful), this version of the song is significantly beefier, as the band injects some of their trademark darkness into proceedings.

They also changed the location of the plot from New Orleans to “Sin City”, which is interesting. Maybe they didn’t want to offend Louisiana?

Of all the different changes this song has gone through over the years, this is one of the most refreshing. The heavier guitar sounds fit the air of doom and gloom surrounding the protagonist, who has ruined his life by committing debaucherous acts, and there’s a sense that 5FDP have brought this old-time classic screaming into the modern age.
