10 Greatest Rock Music Frontmen Of The 60s

6. Arthur Lee

For those less inclined towards straight ahead muscular rock, the ‘60s were an exciting time. In the L.A scene, particularly, things were getting really weird really quickly, and no one took the spirit of invention to more exciting places than Love’s Arthur Lee.

The multi-instrumentalist had kicked his heels as a jobbing songwriter for the early part of the decade, but when he formed Love, he truly let his freak flag fly. This was a band capable of any kind of music, from baroque to folk to mariachi (on their most famous track “Alone Again Or”). Lee’s often understated, wry vocal pitched him as some kind of sage, watching the swiftly changing face of L.A and San Francisco with amusement, knowing he’d done it all before it became trendy.

Despite the new ground he and his band broke, Lee didn’t manage to keep up the pace once the ‘60s were over, and his solo career didn’t generate a great deal of traction. Love, though, remain a true one of a kind.
