10 Greatest Rock Music Gigs Of The 1990s

5. Lollapalooza 1992

As the '90s started to open up, the idea of alternative rock was still a relatively new term. Though REM and Jane's Addiction had gotten us used to more left of the dial bands having hits, it wasn't until the grunge revolution kicked into high gear that people true fell in love with the genre. So it was only a matter of time before we actually got a festival bringing everyone together.

While people might like to talk about seeing a handful of bands in the city of Seattle back in the day as the moment grunge broke, the Lollapalooza festival was where everything truly started to click. Organized by Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, the entire touring lineup was a who's who of talent from the alternative scene, from the side stage offering a heavier taste of things like Rage Against the Machine and Tool to the main stage having everyone from Ice T to Pearl Jam.

Alongside the amazing stunts that Eddie Vedder would pull off during Pearl Jam's set, the addition of Soundgarden to the lineup led to a few impromptu reunions of Temple of the Dog, which marks only a handful of times when the grunge supergroup happened to perform live. If Nirvana had offered to go on as well, this would have probably been rocketed straight to the top as the single most important gig of the entire '90s.
