10 Greatest Rock Music Guitar Solos Of The 2000s

8. Like A Stone - Audioslave

In late 2000, Rage Against the Machine vocalist Zack de la Rocha announced that he would be leaving the band over creative differences. That left the three remaining members without a singer. Luckily, they knew a guy with Chris Cornell’s phone number.

The ex-Soundgarden frontman was brought into the fold and Audioslave was born. This supergroup were together for six years and cranked out three albums in that time, with some bloomin’ great songs to boot. One such banger comes from their 2002 self-titled debut and is called Like a Stone.

A mournful number about life, love, and death, Like a Stone is one of Audioslave’s best, with Cornell’s fine vocal form adding serious weight to the meaty lyrics. Of course, as with any song involving Tom Morello, the solo is beautifully bizarre.

Morello somehow manages to get his guitar to fit the melancholy tone of the record whilst also sounding like a spaceship. His usual brand of whizzes and whirrs are complimented by a healthy dose of echo, creating a sound that is as unusual as it is intoxicating.

You don’t need to know how he does it, just revel in the glorious madness.
