10 Greatest Rock Music One Hit Wonders
3. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers
Every now and again, the rock industry is served up a band that doesn't really feel like they belong in the genre...or planet for that matter. As much as they might seem strange to the common man though, there's always that intrigue that keeps you coming back for more. And as the '80s came to a close, we got treated to one of the dorkiest love songs ever conceived with 500 Miles.
Before we even get into the song, the fact that the Proclaimers even had a hit to begin with in the late '80s is a miracle, considering both of them look like your dad after a long day at work. Once the song starts, you can understand why they made it big, with a chorus that is pretty much unstoppable from start to finish. While not being the most complex thing in the world, these two absolutely sell their lovestruck attitude like it's last thing they'll ever do.
And keep in mind that this is probably the only song where anyone who sings it adopts a Scottish accent. Think about it, people could come from Russia, Japan, or Canada, and yet all of them will sound like they've come straight from Leith whenever they talk about walking five hundrrred miles. It's pretty easy to see why the Proclaimers didn't manage a second hit, but for those few glowing moments, they were the most enduring weirdos on the charts.
