10 Greatest Rock Music One Hit Wonders
4. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger
As rock stumbled its way into the late '90s, it was abundantly clear that the revolution didn't really work out. With Kurt Cobain gone and other artists moving as far away from the grunge label as possible, it almost felt like alternative rock was even starting to become a dirty word. Since there was no real place for irony anymore, the alternative nation started getting salty about itself on Flagpole Sitta.
Even Harvey Danger weren't all that prepared for something like this to go over so well, especially with the singalong chorus being one of the biggest earworms of the late '90s. When you actually look at the lyrics though, vocalist Sean Nelson is a lot more fed up with the scene he's a part of, making jokes about publishing zines and raging against machines. As catchy as it was, it didn't take a hardened alternative fan to know that something was very wrong here.
With nowhere else to go, this was the moment where alternative rock became almost a caricature of itself, as if the bands themselves were in on the joke that the music industry was a load of crap. Although there was a lot of different approaches to alternative music back in the day, this is where all of them hit irony inception and couldn't get back on track. Not sick and not well indeed.
