10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History
6. Them Crooked Vultures
Out of all of the versatile musicians of the world, Dave Grohl seems to have been able to play with everybody under the sun. Along with being one of the nicest men in the music industry, it seems like everybody wants to work with the man as well, from working with Nine Inch Nails and Paul McCartney to probably jamming with a few more people by the time this article even comes out. Though they've always been great for one off performances, Them Crooked Vultures feels like a once in a lifetime collaboration.
Grohl was no stranger to working with Josh Homme, having played drums on Queens of the Stone Age's masterpiece Songs for the Deaf. No, the real X-factor at play here is John Paul Jones, who ironically enough was also the X-factor when he was in Led Zeppelin. Having a lot more seasoned rocker in the band, what could have been dad rock became something a lot more heavy, with Jonesy's bass tone staying as meaty as ever.
Along with the twisted riffs and delectable voice of Homme, you can tell that the band are having fun every step of the way on this record, like the groove of Dead End Friends or the moments when Jones mans the ivories behind the piano. While it's understandable that all of these guys are more than a little bit occupied with their million other endeavors, it's nice that they were at least able to make this work once.
