10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History
5. Temple of the Dog
The entire Seattle community had the collective wind knocked out of their sails with the death of Andy Wood. Long before Kurt Cobain became the biggest tragedy that the grunge world had ever seen, this felt like the moment where the scene lost its innocence, with this starry eyed kid pegged to be a superstar being cut down due to heroin addiction. Life goes on though, and Temple of the Dog is where most of Mother Love Bone managed to pick up the pieces.
Being Andy's roommate for a while, Chris Cornell ended up writing a handful of tribute songs for his fallen friend, and had the bright idea of recording them with the former members of Mother Love Bone. Coming together as the first grunge supergroup, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament fit perfectly with Cornell's voice, especially with newcomer Mike McCready playing leads.
Around the same time that they were finalizing the mixes for this album though, Stone and Jeff were also getting a lineup for a new band with newcomer Eddie Vedder in tow, who ended up contributing vocals to the song Hunger Strike on this album. After the grieving process ended though, we got two great bands out of the deal, with Soundgarden carrying on and the genesis of Pearl Jam being solidified. Though no one can take anything away from Eddie's baritone, this is nice look at an alternate universe where Pearl Jam was fronted by Chris Cornell.
