10 Greatest Taylor Hawkins Moments In Foo Fighters Songs
1. My Hero - The Colour and the Shape
In the early days of the Foos, most of the band wasn't sure if the group was going to be anything more than a vanity project. There was no safety net with these things, so the second album was the moment that they were going to sink or swim. If you ask Nate Mendel though, he said that he knew things were going to be alright the second that Dave came up with the song My Hero.
While this is Dave's song through and through, hearing Taylor play this track night after night was a sight to behold. For the most part, this is probably the closest thing to a power ballad that the Foos could muster, being a love letter to the Everyman and Dave often playing the song on acoustic guitar at most of the group's concerts. When Taylor first joined though, his approach to the drums on this track was what made the song into a real rocker.
You've got the makings of a great song just on acoustics, but what really made the song go every night was the way that Taylor played the drums, dropping in different fills that made the entire rhythm section sound like waves crashing onto the shoreline. More than anything though, this feels like an emblem of what Taylor meant to all of us until the day he passed. He was very much an Everyman of rock and never tried to get caught up in the drama of being a rockstar. At the end of the day, all we have is the music, and Taylor knew how much power he wielded whenever he stepped behind that drumkit.
