10 Greatest Taylor Hawkins Moments In Foo Fighters Songs
2. Everlong (live) - The Colour and the Shape
Most of the early Foo Fighters records don't really show the full scope of what Taylor was capable of. Since the band's debut was just Dave messing around at a studio and The Colour and The Shape had him rerecording the drums of original drummer William Goldsmith, it still felt like a Dave Grohl solo project for a little while. When these songs hit the road though, we got a dose of just the kind of drummer we had on our hands with Taylor behind the kit.
As much as Everlong has been played into the ground time and time again, you really start to forget just how much of a workout the entire song is for the drummer. While you have the intense speed of the verses on the hi hat cymbal, you never really get a break for the rest of the song, as every single chorus has crazy drum fills left and right until the end. That's fine if your name is Dave Grohl, but Taylor manages to give it his all even more in the live versions of the track.
You can chalk it up to adrenaline flowing throughout the live show, but you can hear Taylor never pulling back on any of these drum hits and actually ending up playing the song a bit faster than the studio version some of the time. With all of the musical knowledge that was in that man's head, those years spent idolizing people like Neil Peart were definitely put to good use on this song.
