10 Greatest Taylor Hawkins Moments In Foo Fighters Songs

4. The Pretender - Echoes Silence Patience and Grace

In the grand scheme of Foo Fighters songs, The Pretender had a long journey before being considered one of their greatest hits. During the sessions for Echoes Silence Patience and Grace, Dave wasn't really thinking too much of this song, just making up something on the spot until he realized he had something. As much as Dave might be the mastermind though, the drums are where this song really goes off.

By now, everyone is probably familiar with that pretty guitar line that opens up the whole song, but the first real hook of the song really is Taylor's drums, which gets the blood pumping by just hitting a snare drum. On paper, it seems like the easiest thing in the world to do as a drummer, but the strength behind those hits are a lot more than just your average time keeping.

This was bound to be the opener for the record, and the minute you hear those drums starting, it almost feels like a ticking time bomb for the rest of the song, as the distorted guitars enter in around them and the entire thing spreads out until it goes for broke in the chorus and sustains its momentum all the way to the end. Taylor may be known as a master of serving the song, but sometimes songs need a good kick in the ass as well, and every hit in this song is unapologetic.
