10 Greatest UK No.1 Singles Of The 1990s
4. George Michael & Elton John - Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
It seems strange to include a song that was released in 1974 on this list, but it was in the 90s that this record found its greatest success.
"Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" first saw the light of day on Elton John's Caribou album and charted in both the US and UK top twenties. After falling into relative obscurity, the track got a shot of new life courtesy of Mr. George Micheal.
Michael had first performed the song with John at 1985's Live Aid concert, but it was during the final show of George's 1991 Cover to Cover tour that led to this song becoming a best-seller.
Those in attendance that night got their money's worth and then some. George brought out Elton midway through a performance of this track to duet with him. It was the live recording of this performance that went on to be a massive hit.
John and Michael are two of the best vocalists of their generation and this was captured perfectly in this song. Whilst a well-crafted studio-recorded song is always nice, there's something truly magical about a good live recording.
This wasn't just a gimmick, this was an exercise in showing off. And it worked.
