For as gorgeous and melodic as the song is, the lyrics will tear out your heart and destroy any reason you ever thought you had for living. The song doesn't waste any time before it cuts deep. It imagines what would happen if Jesus were born today. Now, we know the original story ends up pretty depressing (for about three days or so) what with all the torture and crucifixion and Mel Gibson, but check out these lyrics: If you were born today, We'd kill you by age eightNever get the chance to say:Joy to the world andPeace on the earth... So in this version, Jesus doesn't even get to do any of the nice things before he's killed. The song never offers any resolution whether he is resurrected again, it just expands on all the things he wouldn't be able to do. I included this song on the Christmas mix for my friends last year and none of them hang out with me anymore.
