10 Grunge Songs That Are Insanely Heavy

9. Jellybelly - Smashing Pumpkins

As soon as grunge went mainstream, the era of the real rock stars had started to die out. I mean, when you have Kurt Cobain saying that corporate magazines still suck while on the cover of Rolling Stone, you knew that the age of the anti rock star was officially upon us. Billy Corgan had grown up dreaming of something bigger though, and that's what he was aiming for on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

Though this sprawling epic feels like you're living inside Corgan's brain for the better part of an hour, there's a shocking amount of riffs that veer closer to metal than anything alternative. In between the softer ballads like Tonight Tonight, Jellybelly is one of the most ferocious songs that the Pumpkins would ever make, especially after Corgan decided to go more electronic on projects like Adore.

Compared to the straightforward rock tunes that came out around the same time, this is the kind of riff that wouldn't feel that out of place on a Pantera record, as the guitars drag you back down to Earth on every single verse. The Pumpkins always had a vicious streak, but the sounds of Hell didn't just end on Zero. That was just the precursor of what was to come, and Billy was out for blood whenever he strapped on his electric guitar.
