10 Hard Rock Albums With Only One Good Song
1. St. Anger - Metallica
For many metal fans, St. Anger was the album where Metallica officially lost their way. From the ringing snares to the ear piercing vocal breaks, this attempt at a heavier sound ended up being a creative faceplant for most everyone involved. What stings even more is the record started off pretty decently all things considered.
Opening with a blistering rhythm guitar riff, "Frantic" does a good job at setting up the new sound of the record. Yes, the snares are prevalent from the beginning, but it doesn't deter the song's energy. The entire theme behind the track is about being paranoid about everything in order for you to stay afloat, which seems to go well with the track's raw sound.
Like all of the tracks on St. Anger, the song could have benefited from a solo from Kirk Hammett, but the tune is still a great foray into the more aggressive forms of metal that were coming out at the time. Immediately afterwards, the album falls into a trap of sounding to same-y along with having terrible production due to the band's strenuous recording process.
Though the album has weathered its fair share of mud slinging, "Frantic" still stands out as the one instance of Metallica's raw sound done correctly.
