10 Hard Rock Albums With Only One Good Song
8. Chinese Democracy - Guns N Roses
Let's face it, no one was expecting Guns N Roses to live up to their previous potential on Chinese Democracy. After losing practically the entire band in the mid 90's, Axl Rose spent the next 14 years laboring over the album with a myriad cast of musicians around him. By the time it finally arrived, most fans were already prepared to wash their hands of the project.
Though most of the record suffers from years of overanalysis, "Shackler's Revenge" is actually pretty decent given the maligned album sessions. The riff sprinkled throughout the verses has a slightly seductive vibe, almost as if its a snake wrapping you in its coil. The song also has a nice arrangement, with Axl's vocals meshing well with the guitar lines of Buckethead, Robin Finck, and Bumblefoot respectively.
The song does have a common issue with the other tracks in that it feels completely overproduced, but the sonic foundation behind the song is still extremely heavy. While the rest of the album feels slightly tired and lethargic, "Shackler's Revenge" shows the dangerous side of GNR out in full force once again. Chinese Democracy may have been a disappointment, but this track showed Axl's creative juices hadn't run dry just yet.
