10 Hard Rock Albums You Need To Listen To With Headphones
6. Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
In the early 90's, no one was really itching to be a big rock star. Though bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were lighting up the charts, they would normally play down their celebrity status rather than seize the opportunity. In an era when anti-rockstars were the hip thing, Billy Corgan had the gall to release a record with the same bombast as a 70's rock release.
Across its hour length, Siamese Dream feels like the band taking all of the alternative sounds and transforming them into some of the most awe-inspiring tunes of the era. A song like "Today" is so sonically large that it almost seems to transcend the typical blown-out speakers newer bands like Stone Temple Pilots were doing. While this album sounds stellar, the road to get there was a bit of a rocky one.
Under the production of alternative juggernaut Butch Vig, Corgan's immense pressure to live up to his potential led him to track almost the entire record by himself without any input from the rest of the band.
So when you hear something as bombastic as "Cherub Rock," you're hearing dozens of guitar tracks all coming from Corgan's head. This control-freak tendency ended up tearing the band apart, but when the results are this spellbinding, it's clear that Corgan made the right call.
