10 Hard Rock Bands That Destroyed Their Own Career
8. Weezer
It's somewhat difficult to put a group that's still making albums on a list of career flameouts. For all intents and purposes, Weezer have actually been doing pretty well for themselves from a business standpoint, with their cover of Africa by Toto being one of their biggest hits in ages. However, the decline of the Weezer empire all comes down to their inability to remain consistent.
Back in the '90s, these guys were a welcome change of pace from grunge, with their nerd rock songs being just the kind of lighthearted thing to separate them from the Nirvanas of the world. Once they regrouped after the massive bomb Pinkerton though, things started to turn a corner. Ever since, Rivers Cuomo has used Weezer as a vehicle for new sounds to fit in with the pop demographic. This was made abundantly clear on Raditude, where nearly all of the group's charisma was thrown out the window in an attempt to reach a pop audience.
Then again, there have been some career highlights like the White Album's beachy vibes and the return to form on Everything Will be Alright in the End. However, those kind of dreams of something good are all but torn to shreds when Weezer fall back into bad habits once again. The Weezer we once knew might not be dead right now, but what they're serving up these days is a shell of what they once were.
