10 Hard Rock Bands Who Had TWO Great Singers

9. Ian Gillan/David Coverdale - Deep Purple

The early days of Deep Purple seem to be marred in obscurity nowadays. After fiddling around with their original lineup, the band didn't make the right noise until they found Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. The band already had a solid foundation, but Gillan's incredible range gave them the voice they had always been looking for.

However, the good times with this incarnation were not meant to last, with Gillan leaving the group along with Glover after a few years of rigorous touring and infighting. It looked like the days of Purple in the spotlight were gone for good, but fate had other plans for these rockers.

The band's first auditions for replacements were big-name rockers like Paul Rogers of Bad Company, but the band eventually settled on a relatively unknown singer named David Coverdale, whose bluesy wail put them on top yet again on the album Burn. Adding more muscle to the band was bassist Glenn Hughes, whose incredible backing vocals and screaming passages gave this incarnation of the band a vocal team that could play off each other. It's tough out there for anyone to recapture the magic of a frontman twice, but Purple made it look so easy that 3 equally strong singers were able to come through their ranks.
