10 Hard Rock Bands Who Had TWO Great Singers

4. Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell - Alice In Chains

The entire grunge scene of Seattle turned the world of hard rock on its head. Instead of having a high-end vocal on your song, suddenly it was all about how low your singer was and how authentic they were about their craft. There were still standouts in the crowd like Chris Cornell, but the vocal team in Alice in Chains was something else entirely.

While there's no disputing that Layne Staley was the frontman for the band, guitarist Jerry Cantrell was the one who actually took the band's vocal presence to a different place. Cantrell was still entrenched in heavy music like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but his involvement in his high school choir led to him developing an ear for vocal harmony.

Any number of AOC classics feature this kind of harmony singing, which blends together in just the right way to mezmerize the listener. On songs like "No Excuses" and "Rooster," it's hard to even tell which vocal is the actual melody and which is the harmony given the tunefulness of both of them. Though Staley eventually succumbed to drug addiction in the early 2000's, the band's new life with William DuVall has made for some great vocal teamups going forward. There may have been some great vocalists in the grunge scene, but Alice In Chains were the one band that gave you two great singers for the price of one.
