10 Hard Rock Cover Songs That Are Better Than The Original
5. Turn the Page - Metallica
It's hard to look at Garage Inc. by Metallica as anything more than just a stop gap in between albums. While this comes right in the middle of a dark time for Metallica sandwiched between Reload and St. Anger, this is a nice throwback to the days before these thrash titans got famous, complete with some old school metal tunes to jam on. However, the most intriguing part of this album is when things get a little more experimental like on Turn the Page.
Though Metallica would cover legends all the time, this was never officially on their covers setlist, with James Hetfield discovering it after it was played on the radio while on tour. Taken by the idea of the traveling musician who never sees an end to his energetic performances, there's a certain strength that comes with Metallica's performance, with the amazing saxophone line being replaced with Kirk Hammett's tone bending distorted guitar notes.
Instead of seeing the touring life as a burden like in Seger's version, Metallica makes this ode to the road feel like the constant call of a journeyman, itching to get back on the road again to escape the hassle of everyday life. Also featuring some of the bluesiest playing these guys have ever done on record, Turn the Page is one of the few reasons why Garage Inc. is worth more than just a passing glance.
