10 Hard Rock Live Albums You Need To Hear
5. Frampton Comes Alive - Peter Frampton
For as high as his rock pedigree was in rock's glory days, Peter Frampton was having a difficult time establishing himself as a solo artist. Originally coming from the blues rock outfit Humble Pie, Frampton's guitar skills were some of the finest in the business but were not translating very well to record sales. Once he hit the stage though, fans across the world were falling for him all over again.
Originally meant to be just a single release, the shows for Frampton Comes Alive were so spectacular that the A&R department of Frampton's label insisted on it being released as a double record.
Playing to both sides of the rock spectrum, Frampton turns in some of his best ballads on "Baby I Love Your Way" while also flexing some of his best solos on tracks like "Lines on My Face." Even if the 14 minute "Do You Feel Like We Do" looks a bit daunting, that stretch of time becomes a transformative musical experience once you settle into its groove.
Along with some of the greatest blues licks of all time, this record may have single-handedly doubled the amount of musicians using a talkbox, whose ethereal sound has become a signature for arena rock. Humble Pie may have been a nice start, but Frampton Comes Alive was the lynch pin that thrust Frampton out of his former band's shadow.
