It almost feels like cheating putting an act like GWAR on a list like this. When you're talking about some of the most amazing costumes and absolutely nuts live shows they have put on over the years, the music almost feels like an adornment at the best of times. However, there is still some clever things going on behind the scenes, just not with the same people.
Ever since forming in the late '80s (or on their home planet for those who follow), this was the perfect combination of grotesque and musical to get any metalhead acquainted with the sillier side of rock. Though there was a lot of dark themes and tasteless parts of GWAR's sound, you still could sense the tongue in cheek humor that was coming from these guys whenever they took to the stage. With an ever-evolving lineup, the GWAR train quickly turned into a tribute show as the 2010s began.
Being the main heart behind the group in the early days, original founding member Dave Brockie passed away in 2014 after OD'ing on heroin. As the unholy train of alien lifeforms ploughs forward though, the power of their live shows has not diminished in the slightest. No matter who is behind the masks now, it's clear that Brockie's original vision led to something truly unstoppable.
