10 Hard Rock Music Songs Artists Want You To Forget
2. Dancing In The Street - Van Halen
When you look back on Van Halen's discography, it's pretty hard to find a dud in the David Lee Roth years. Though Sammy Hagar definitely had his fair share of highlights with the group, the band were never firing on all cylinders quite like they were with Dave behind the wheel, bringing just the right charisma to offset some of Eddie's incredible guitar licks. These guys were the biggest thing around, so naturally that meant their label had to drive them into the dirt.
Outside of a few songs, Diver Down wasn't really even supposed to be made, being comprised of mainly covers to just have an album out to capitalize on the success of (Oh) Pretty Woman. It might be the easy way out to just knock out a bunch of odds and ends, but Eddie and Alex really started to take issue once Dancing in the Street became a part of the conversation.
Compared to the old school rock songs they would cover, the rest of the band thought this was one of the cheesiest songs they ever made, with Roth being one of the only people to stand by it in the group. Eddie also got extra salty when he was never given a partial writing credit, since the opening musical piece is 100% his before going into the Martha and the Vandellas '60s classic. Granted, it's not like there isn't some tonal clash. When you release something like this and the next single you hear is Panama, you've definitely changed your course.
