10 Hard Rock Songs Added At The Last Minute
3. Would? - Alice in Chains
Alice In Chains' "Would?" is one of the greatest alternative songs to ever come from Seattle in the early '90's. From the guitar riff to the slinky bass line, the entire track epitomizes the Seattle sound with a gutteral aura that feels like it's coming from the bottom of the Earth. Though the song is among their best, it almost never made it onto a studio record.
Originally written as a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andy Wood, the band initially offered it up to Cameron Crowe to be used in the romantic comedy Singles, which took place in Seattle. As time went on though, there was a certain power behind the song that couldn't be ignored. When the band started to assemble tracks for their next album Dirt, "Would?'s" narrative about a strung out addict asking for forgiveness from his friends ended up fitting like a glove at the end of the record.
It may not have even been written for the record, but "Would?" has come to symbolize every beautiful nightmare that is contained inside Dirt. This song is certainly not a pleasant ride to take every day, but it's just as powerful on the album as it would be on the soundtrack.
