10 Hard Rock Songs Added At The Last Minute
2. The Pretender - Foo Fighters
The Foo Fighters had really set a high benchmark for themselves after the double album In Your Honor. With years of playing heavy rock songs under their belt, the band toyed with their songwriting approach by writing two CD's worth of acoustic cuts and headbangers. Going into their next record Echoes Silence Patience and Grace, Dave Grohl was prepared to try and meld the two disparate styles together on one disc.
While the development of the record seemed to be going fine initially, the band started to feel pretty burnt out by the time they were wrapping up. Once their producer decided to go on vacation for a week, Grohl started to build one more epic song by approaching his guitar like a drum set. Starting with a gentle acoustic passage, Grohl added every possible extension onto it until it became the juggernaut that is "The Pretender."
When the producer returned, the song became so big that it nearly overshadowed every other song on the record with its power. Though the album ended up doing amazingly well, "The Pretender" has almost taken on another life as one of the band's greatest stadium anthems. Echoes Silence Patience and Grace tends to be a hit-or-miss record for fans, but many can agree that this song still kicks ass.
