10 Hard Rock Songs By Non-Hard Rock Artists
1. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
Though the Fab Four were not on good terms by the late 60's, the band regrouped to polish one last classic record with Abbey Road. While the gang was back together again, each songwriter still wanted to experiment with what they could do with the typical rock song. John Lennon's way of pushing forward amid the strife was to strip everything down to its essentials.
"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is a fairly rudimentary song, but the actual sound being produced is absolutely gargantuan. Most of the lyrical content involves only singing the title, but the guitar from Lennon is some of the most bluesy material he has ever laid down. The bulk of the song is a fun bluesy vamp, but something more sinister comes with the breakdown sections, whose revolving guitar riffs sound like a monster stomping across your speakers.
Knowing the quality of the riff, the band pound away on this chord progression for ages, which lulls the listener into an eerie trance. Ever the musical troll, Lennon wanted to shock his audience and demanded that the song end in the middle of the riff. In one epic track, The Beatles had created the blueprint for heavy metal as well as hints of more progressive rock passages.
