10 Hard Rock Songs By The Beatles
1. Hey Bulldog
By the time the Fabs had gotten into their psychedelic period of Sgt. Pepper, their commitment to film projects was the last thing on their agenda. With their management demanding one more movie soundtrack for the animated Yellow Submarine, the band assembled a compilation of odds and ends for the kids feature.
What casual Beatles fans don't know is one of the band's most energetic rockers managed to sneak its way onto the soundtrack. While the band were cutting "Hey Bulldog," a camera crew was brought in to film some promotional footage for their single "Lady Madonna." Not wanting to get slowed down from work, the band decided not to lip sync and worked on a new track that Lennon had brought in.
Centered around a bluesy piano lick, this song has a definite swagger to its presentation, even if the lyrics are pretty much nonsensical by Lennon's own admission. The freedom and abandon of the session is even present at the end of the track, with Lennon and McCartney goofing around in the vocal booth making mock dog barks to go with the K-9 theme. Even if their focus on the film was half-hearted, "Hey Bulldog" remains an undiscovered gem for Beatles' fans.
