10 Hated Bands That Are A Lot Better Than You Think

8. Matchbox 20

For all it gave to the world, grunge really didn't deserve to die an ugly death like it did. As soon as Kurt Cobain's death shook the music world, any potential for the genre to grow faded along with him, bringing out other wannabes that had no business singing about the problems. Say what you want to about the regular grunge mainstays...at least they didn't delve into adult alternative territory like Matchbox 20.

Or at least, that's what was being said at the time. Across their first couple of albums, songs like 3am and Push were supposed to be a signal for everything wrong with the end of grunge, with angst anthems being transformed to suit the college frat boys. Once you strip away the pretentiousness though, Yourself or Someone Like You is still a pretty damn good album even with its more dated production, showing that Rob Thomas and co. at least had potential to be something better.

Granted, they ended up running out of steam pretty quickly, with each successive album having just a handful of singles worth knowing before leaving your mind. Despite having a few boring elements though, their comeback in the early 2010's wasn't half bad either, even turning in another hit with She's So Mean. So next time you go to bat for Rob Thomas' punchable face, check up on those early albums and see the raw talent that we were actually working with.
