10 Hated Bands That Are A Lot Better Than You Think
5. Dave Matthews Band
After the stench of grunge started to make its way out, the entire rock genre was about to get crazy weird. Seeing how the alternative label left everything open to reach the top, everything from Red Hot Chili Peppers to the Presidents of the United States of America found their way onto the charts in some form or another. Of all the weird genres though, the jam band was probably the most acquired taste of them all.
Across the discographies of artists like Phish and Blues Traveler, most listeners were perplexed more than anything whenever they heard their music. Then again, no other jam band got the outright scorn of Dave Matthews, whose music got lambasted for being too cool for school in terms of the other acts around him. Instead of the impressive showmanship, the cool demeanor of Matthews and the sleepy tone of his tunes felt almost sleazy at times, as if he was playing it up for the coffeehouse circuit.
That's only on record though. When it comes to the live stage, Matthews always delivers one hell of a performance, picking through crazy complex chord arrangements almost by second nature. Always surrounding himself with the best players, his live records like Live in Central Park paint a much more broad picture of what he can really do. For all the mudslinging that has been thrown at his pillowy stuff, Dave Matthews may be the one act that really has to be seen to be heard.
