10 Hated Rock Songs That Are Actually Really Good

4. Numb - U2

When U2 found their way to the other side of the '90s, it felt like they had done the impossible. After being the saviors of rock with the Joshua Tree, they upended their style entirely with Achtung Baby and found a whole new audience, being influenced by glitchy production and more electronic soundscapes. So it would make sense to double down on the experimental side of things...just make sure that someone was actually singing.

From the minute that Numb was released as a single, most of the U2 community responded with a resounding...huh? Since we had gotten used to the soul behind Bono's voice, here was the Edge just sing-speaking his way through most of this song while Bono added the occasional vocal in the background. While it would make sense for most of the fanbase to be pissed over a song like this, it's a perfect example of a song that grows on you over time.

Coming from the world of dance music, this feels like U2 trying their hand at industrial music, with the Edge understanding his role perfectly. Sure, it might get a little monotonous to hear his voice, but the whole point is for him to feel like just another instrument, being almost disaffected by all of the words that he has to say in the background. There might be a million other U2 songs that the fans would listen to before this, but it's respectable to still see the band taking some chances as the years go on.
