10 Hated Rock Songs That Are Actually Really Good

3. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - John Mayer

There's a good portion of rock fans that can only stomach a few seconds of John Mayer before changing the station. This is the kind of guy that ended up giving guitar players a bad name, with the strange kind of anti charisma that makes you happy to see him fail. For all of the douchey behavior that he may have done in the past, John was always a damn good songwriter, and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room might be his crowning achievement.

Being a great fan of classic artists like Jimi Hendrix, you can hear Mayer trying to tap into that same kind of magic here, looking to make guitar solos that you can sing along to instead of just shredding for the hell of it. Compared to the other 'white guy with acoustic guitar' acts around this time, John could really play, and the kind of licks that he sprinkles in between the verses are some of the tastiest bits of music that the '00s had ever produced.

While it's easy to wince at some of the lyrics though, there's actually a lot of poignance in here as well, where John is picking up the pieces of his broken relationship and trying to put it together even though it will never be the same. We're a far ways off from dirty rock and roll here, but there's nothing wrong with having the sweeter side of rock in your diet every now and again.
