10 Hated Rock Songs That Are Actually Really Good
2. D'You Know What I Mean - Oasis
It's really funny to see the kind of reception that Oasis' Be Here Now has gotten both then and now. In just a few years, it has gone from a masterpiece to one of the worst albums ever and is now starting to inch its way back to being a sort of misunderstood gem in their catalog. And while D'You Know What I Mean seems like a song about nothing on the surface, there's a lot more nuance in Noel Gallagher's lyrics here.
Since the title is just a throwaway phrase used by the Gallaghers, most of the lyrics were assumed to be the usual nonsense songs in the vein of I Am The Walrus. When you know Noel's backstory though, you can hear him seething with anger underneath this song, as he adds perspective on his upbringing. Coming from an abusive household, you can hear Noel getting out his frustration in this song about how he had to take control of the family and fend them off from his father at an early age.
Given the fact that almost every Oasis song rides the line between heartfelt and incoherent, it's really moving to see Noel put this kind of heartache on display for the world to see, especially at a time when he was being looked at as the new king of rock. He may have been at the top of the food chain, but that doesn't happen overnight. Every king has to struggle, and the Chief knew that all too well when he sat down to write this song.
