10 Heaviest Metallica Songs Ever Made
1. The Thing That Should Not Be
Any casual Metallica fan was probably noting a particular absence of their greatest album when talking about the heaviest songs they have ever made. After all, making a list of heavy rock songs and not including anything from Master of Puppets is probably enough to get you burned at the critical stake for not being well versed in your material. When it comes to heavy though, The Thing That Should Not Be stands head and shoulders above any of its contemporaries.
Since most of the songs on Puppets were written before recording began, this was the group's first experiment with writing a tune in the studio, which gave way to a backing track that sounded like it was emerging right from the crypt. Along the lines of the instrumental The Call of Ktulu from their last album, this is the kind of slow chugging riff that makes for one of the beefiest listens in the Metallica catalog, as James talks about this hideous creature lurking beneath the sea and rising to stomp all in its path.
Even in the studio, the guys felt that having the normal speed wasn't heavy enough, instead deciding to slow it down and tune down their guitars to make a song that sounded more along the lines of something like Black Sabbath. Though Metallica have never forsaken their credentials as a thrash band, this is the kind of harsh plodding groove that the kings of stoner rock wish they could have written.
