10 Heaviest Metallica Songs Ever Made
4. Sad But True
Any hardcore metal fan has had their fair bit of contention when it comes to the Black Album. As invigorating as it was to see a metal band actually gracing the charts, who the hell was asking for one of the greatest metal bands on Earth to go all soft and radio-friendly? While Nothing Else Matters definitely was a change of pace, you didn't need to worry about them losing their edge on Sad But True.
Compared to the rest of the songs on the Black Album, these are probably the heaviest guitars that James Hetfield had ever committed to tape. Tuned lower than they were used to at the time, this is the type of groovy metal that made so many people jump on the bandwagon, trading in the bombastic headbanging for a slow nodding rhythm as the track plods along.
This is also one of the more complex lyrics that James decided to tackle at this point, introducing himself as the object of this person's hatred before flipping it around to being the evil that's within all of us. For as much as it suffered from a lack of presence on the last album, this song is a powerhouse for Jason Newsted as well, providing just the right low end to offset the guitars. Even though Metallica were being accused of selling out, if they still had songs like these, we didn't have to worry about a damn thing.
