10 Heaviest Metallica Songs Ever Made
5. Where the Wild Things Are
Looking back on the Load era of Metallica, a lot of the metal facets of their sound just felt more and more hollow. After all, when you name your band after the heavy genre you're associated with, who the hell was asking you to make something like Mama Said or Until it Sleeps? For all of the messy experiments though, you do get a few that succeed like on Where the Wild Things Are.
Being one of the few songs with contributions from Jason Newsted, the demonic riff behind this song feels like it's ripped straight out of your nightmares, as it slithers in before Hetfield gives it the guts it deserves. Even though the push and pull dynamic of the track feels a bit strange at first, the entire production has a bit of a prog rock bent to it, almost like you're being taken on a journey through this creepy landscape.
Hell, if anything, this was probably the greatest way that Metallica could have hoped to find common ground with the alt-metal brethren that were populating the scene at the time, with the clean guitar chords feeling like they would fit on top of an Alice in Chains production. We're a far ways off from something like Whiplash, but it's still a welcome change to see if you're feeling curious as to where Metallica headed after Enter Sandman.
