10 Highly Underrated Rock Music Album Covers

9. Hot Cakes - The Darkness

The Darkness have never shied away from wearing their influences on their sleeves. One look at Justin Hawkins will tell you that he is a man who likes glam rock and is perfectly comfortable with you knowing that.

As well as expressing their passion for the past in their music, the band have also gone retro on several of their album covers. The cover of their first record, Permission to Land, features a naked lady directing an alien spaceship on a runway. So far, so 70s.

For their 2012 album Hot Cakes, the band took this idea to a whole new level and suddenly made everyone very interested in a certain breakfast item.

Hot Cakes' cover shows three scantily ladies covered in maple syrup spread out over some giant pancakes. It was pained by the artist Rob Chenery, based on a real modelling session with real women.

Sure, it's sleazy and a little bit gross, but that's exactly the sort of thing The Darkness like. They are an unapologetic throwback to another time, offering a wink and a nod to the ridiculousness of a bygone era.

This artwork is out-and-out smut, and it's brilliant.
