10 Highly Underrated Rock Music Drummers
2. Terry Bozzio - Frank Zappa
From the age of six, Terry Bozzio knew he wanted to play the drums.
As a child, he would put together makeshift kits and play them as if they were real. When he was 13, he saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, and his fate was sealed.
He bounced around a number of different jazz groups in the early 1970s before joining up with mad genius Frank Zappa in 1975, initially as a touring drummer. Bozzio played on 26 different albums with Zappa, which would normally be a lot, but that's barely a drop in the ocean for the Zapmeister.
As well as those, Bozzio has also appeared on records by Jeff Beck, Debbie Harry, 10cc, The Knack, and Korn. His proficiency alone would be enough to get him on this list; the fact that he's super talent is a bonus.
Fusing rock stylings with jazz tropes, Bozzio is always able to leave an imprint on a track. His ability to create mesmerising patterns and rhythms is second to none, and he's been able to stay gainfully employed for many decades as a result.
He might have been a basket case, but Zappa didn't work with chumps.
