10 Horrible Hard Rock Songs By Great Artists

4. Mother - The Police

The Police are one of those rare acts that actually seemed to get better with each passing album. They may have only had a handful of records to their name, but their journey from the punkish aggression of their debut to the vast soundscapes of their later work was something no one saw coming. The band seemed at the peak of their powers by the time they hit Synchronicity, but this exquisite pop masterpiece does have a huge turd in the middle of its track listing.

Although songs like "Every Breath You Take" and "Synchronicity II" hold up as some of the band's best, "Mother" is a weird avant garde experiment that has absolutely no place on this album. Looking to have more of an artistic voice in the band, this track is credited solely to guitarist Andy Summers, who goes off on the somewhat abusive relationship he had at the hands of his mother.

While every artist strives to put their heart and soul into their work, Summers' dissection of his mother smothering and eating (?) him is much too awkward on an album full of open-heart yearning. The Police only have a few albums to their name, but given that B-sides like "Murder By Numbers" exist, why was it this song that had to make the cut for the album?
