10 Huge Rock Albums That Didn't Deserve To Flop
2. Sonic Highways - Foo Fighters
Since the moment they started, the entire rock landscape has had a mild soft spot for the Foo Fighters every time they come together for a new project. Whether it's the actual music or just the pure charm of seeing Dave Grohl do his thing onstage, every single Foos record feels like checking in on a couple of friends that you haven't seen in a while and catching up on what's been going on. And when Dave came up for air, he had definitely put some more miles under his belt on Sonic Highways.
Trying to balance a documentary TV series and an album at the same time made for this album to be a little bit lopsided, taking the many guests on the record and putting them into weird positions, like the strange Ben Gibbard feature on Subterranean. Even though some of the core sounds of this record might seem middle of the road by the Foos' standards, the actual heart behind these songs is what saves it.
Looking to dissect what draws people to music, hearing these songs in context creates a much richer experience from Dave, comparing his music to an almost spiritual connection on songs like Congregation and Something From Nothing. Because after playing years of shows and losing many good friends along the way, these songs are basically memories that have been captured onto the tape.
