10 HYPED Albums That Didn't Live Up To Their High Expectations
4. Hot Space - Queen
Whenever a rock band decides to cross over into pop, you're playing with fire. As much as you might like the appeal of being heard by millions of fans across the world, there's always the worry that you're going to alienate the core audience that you got for the past few years. And Queen looked like they toed the line perfectly on Another One Bites the Dust, so why not just try to do it all over again?
For the most part, Hot Space was Queen's attempt to go full pop, going into dance territory that was modeled off of what Michael Jackson was doing with Thriller around the same time. What we get instead is a Queen album that really feels like it should be a Michael Jackson record, with songs like Back Chat not really suiting the band's sound all that well. While this record does have its fans both then and now, even the rest of the band hasn't looked back that fondly on it, even with Roger Taylor saying that he wasn't a huge fan of some of the songs on the album.
Then again, Queen have a baseline of quality, and Hot Space still has its fair share of good moments, including a beautiful tribute to John Lennon on Life is Real. If they were trying to equal the same kind of success as the King of Pop though, this is far from that level of greatness. Still, any album that includes a song like Under Pressure on it is still well worth a listen for any fan of music.
